Another place that might take books is your local hospital. A lot of them have libraries that depend on donated books, and having been in hospital a few times myself, I know how boring it can be when you're getting better but you're not quite well enough to go home yet, so a bit of distraction or entertainment is really welcome.

I try to tell someone in a store "I appreciate what you do."
Also, instead of "Have a nice day." I say, "I hope your workday goes quickly for you." You would be surprised how much people are surprised and pleased people are to be recognized this way.

I recently put all of our excess books to good use. I donated them to our local library. The library has periodic sales of discarded and donated books to raise money for equipment and new books.
The purchaser also gets a great deal on a gently used book.

I wish I'd had the foresight to have the hot water on demand spout installed in my kitchen. I missed that boat - so, I got a Sunbeam Hotshot. It heats up a large mug of water very quickly - much faster than running the microwave or heating it on the stove. It also dispenses right into my cup. A quick and easy solution and no waste.

I placed my phone charger in an inconvenient area. That ensures that I will unplug the phone so it is readily available as soon as possible. It's too easy to leave it plugged in if it is easily accessible.
Also, I plug the phone in to charge as I'm driving. That cuts down on the electrical charges required.

I found durable, water resistant shopping bags - in the beach section of the dollar store! The bags have a sturdy, squared bottom and extra pockets to organize purchases.
These bags are much easier to carry than the plastic bags too!

I would like to find a way to send used books that are in good condition, to either schools or libraries that can not afford to purchase books on their own. Or libraries that have been damaged and need to replace collections, or have little funds available to purchase books on their own

Have people sign up for a free daily reminder and allow them to give bowls of food to needy animals, mammograms to women, habitat protection for the rainforest, and literacy, healthcare, and cups of food to hungry kids..

I don't know how good a reflection of this country's habits and behaviour this site is, but somehow I think it's a little sad that according to the rankings, turning the tap off while we brush our teeth is practised nearly 10 times more than saying thanks or smiling. :( or should that be :) to make up for the shortage?

Re Anoel's comment that s/he loves watching TV: this action says "try watching less TV", NOT "turn off your TV forever". The point is doing stuff in moderation, so instead of vegging out in front of the telly all the time, do something else for entertainment every so often. Just like my doctor's told me to cut down on cheese because of the high fat/cholesterol content, but as I absolutely LOVE cheese there's no way I'm going to give it up completely, so I'm just making an effort to eat a bit less.

its cheaper to by milk from the shop up the road. in asda and tesco its 1.44, in lidl its 1.40 and in the local shop its 1.20. so we always get our milk from there.
its also easier to get 2 :)

I love TV and would rather die before doing this. I think it's ridiculous that people are always saying turn off your TV. No, the important thing is only watch TV that you enjoy and that brings you happiness or enhances your life such as more knowledge or promoting creativity. I watch a lot of TV and I'm very proud of it. In the end it's about moderation and doing what you love.

It is a shame there are no photos of the consternation on the face of the English people (us) when having bought a huge amount of shopping, we looked around for bags to put it in. The cashier watched with faint Gallic amusement as we flapped about before taking pity on us and telling us that there were cardboard boxes 'la bas'. And then it dawned...no single use carrier bags in the hypermarket. Was it just here? No, in all the supermarkets and shops we used, no one used plastic bags. Of course, being ecohousewife I had a shopping bag with me and the boxes became a fixture for a week in the car. There was no panic, nobody was refusing to shop because they could not have a plastic bag with 'HyperChampion' written all over it.
And now back in England, I watch in the queue as dozens of bags are handed out to supermarket customers, sometimes with only one item in them. You can't all have come in here on a whim and then bought a week's shopping. Did you suddenly realise that you were out of milk, bread and tea bags while sauntering up the high street and that it why you have to put three items into an enormous bag? Can you really not carry that can of coke and a cheese sandwich in your hand until you get to where you're going? Oh yes, you like to use them for your rubbish. Will that be the small bags you leave next to the bins or in the gutter on Green Lanes. Sorry, but free rubbish bag with every purchase isn't really good enough. Shopping bags not cool? If my husband, northern beer drinking man par excellence, can be persuaded to use a shopping bag, so can you...so for today at least, Vive la France!
