About the action tracker

Here at We Are What We Do we believe that "small actions x lots of people = big change". In order to prove it (white coats on, clipboards at hand) we need to start by measuring how many people and how many actions we're talking about.

The Personal Action Tracker is a tool to help us, and help you, see how we're doing so far. The tracker allows you to capture all the bits of goodness that you do on a daily, weekly or monthly basis (it's up to you!) and show the world you're doing your part.

You collar them, we count them

Come to the site, sign in (or register if you don't have an account yet), select which actions you've been doing or want to do, and add them to your tracker. Then you can come back as often as you like and update the action count.

So how does the counting work? Mmmm. For example, if you spread the word to three friends, then add three. Or if you decline plastic bags at five different shops, add five (or add 10 if you declined two bags per shop!). Or if you feel like there is something you do lots of all the time, you may want to add a big number all at once, say 365 to cover for a whole year's worth of smile and smile back.*

It's not an exact science, but whatever works for you, if you do it on a regular basis -- like many other things in life -- it will make you feel good, put a smile on your face, give a glow on your skin and people will comment on how well and happy you look today thankyou-very-much.

And you're not tracking alone, with the Action Tracker, you can see the monthly and daily rankings for all action trackers. And you can choose to follow your friends' progress to see how together you're adding up to a whole lot of small actions.

In time we'll also be showing you how many actions are being done in which countries, whether oldies are more active than young folk, and if it's true that girls are more prone to do good actions than boys. For us to be able to do this, we need all of you, action trackers, to fill in as much information as possible in your personal account profile (but it's really up to you how much you want to tell us).

Big change?

Yes, we know that accounting alone doesn't prove there is big change and that the only way we'll be able to tell if there's a difference is by careful observation of our environment and our study subjects (no experiments, promise!)

But we can't be everywhere all the time, so this is where you come in again. Send us your stories of small world-changing actions, share your photos, and drop us a line to help us tell the world that the formula surely works.

* but don't go crazy -- if your tracker goes up monumentally in one go, we may temporarily suspend your account and ask you to tell us how come you did so many actions, just to keep the tracking fair and square, you understand.
