Action #095

Earn fewer air miles

This action has been done 1,641 times which means we've reduced carbon emissions by roughly 113,557.2 kg.

How we did the maths

Tough one, this. Cheap air travel is, let's face it, a nice thing. So, asking you to cut back on it sounds like the killjoy equivalent of some one saying 'cut back on music' or 'cut back on lie-ins'.

But, just for a minute, look at the facts - air travel is the fastest growing contributor to climate change, spewing nearly ten times more CO2 into the sky than an equivalent train journey.

Or 100% more CO2 than not traveling at all and opting for holiday in England or a video conference call if you're one of those people who have meetings in other countries, not other rooms. Come on - video conferencing isn't that bad. That jerky movement and time delay on the sound makes everyone look like they're in a 1970's Thunderbirds episode. Enjoy it.

    Eurostar!!

I've had few holidays via the Eurostar now and have to say it made the whole experience more enjoyable, no lengthy check in, no long security, and no waiting for bags, and to top that, apart from when in tunnels you get a great view and its point to point. No annoying trip FROM the airport the other end.

I only fly now if its long haul and that is VERY rare. Like every couple of years rare.

Have never and will never fly.

Not just through fear but also think as a mode of transport it is far too used and ruining the economy as well as the world. 23 January 2010, 20:31

Seems quite a shame that this is one of the less popular ones...

As it happens, it isn't difficult for our family to cut back. We only have one return flight per year, and this year we're not flying at all because we can't afford it. If I were holidaying alone then I'd prefer an alternative to flying, not just because of the CO2 emissions, but because I spend most flights alternating between fascinated and terrified. Plane journeys are only enjoyable during the parts where I'm not scared xD 13 January 2010, 22:49

    The Snow Train

Our group of snowboarders made a change and took the snow train to the Alps this year instead of flying. It was not only more fun but we got 8 days on the snow and all for the same price! Here's a really good site about it:
